How the Topsoil Calculator Works

For example, an area 20 feet long and 10 feet wide has 200 square feet of surface area. A 6-inch depth is 0.5 feet, so the base volume is 100 cubic feet. The calculator can then add the percentage of extra material you specify.
Why Topsoil Depth Matters
Soil depth directly affects the amount of topsoil required. Increasing the depth from 3 inches to 6 inches doubles the volume needed for the same surface area.
